Which makes it the perfect album for Discord & Rhyme’s gala 100th-episode celebration! We’ve rounded up the whole D&R gang for this one, and we all have completely different perspectives on which songs are keepers. It didn’t work, but their colorful experiences formed the bedrock of the double album The Beatles, colloquially referred to as “the White Album.” It’s a sprawling, diffuse, maddening, and bloody brilliant group of songs, and whether or not it’s your favorite Beatles album, it did a lot to expand the definition of what an album could be and what types of songs a band could even write. It’s also the closest thing we have to a Beatles/Sinatra collaboration. In 1968, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr traveled to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in Rishikesh, India, buckling under the pressures of more fame than any band had experienced to that point and seeking spiritual release. 'I left because I felt two things: I felt I wasn't playing great, and I also felt that the other three were really happy and I was an outsider. However, it’s still nice to know that Sinatra took time to record a version of his own song for Maureen. Fed up with tensions during the White Album, Ringo Starr quit the Beatles on 22 August 1968. We may never hear the official unofficial song. However, a poorly recorded version “somehow started circulating among collectors, and it even found its way onto some Beatles bootleg records, including one called ‘The Beatles – Unbootlegged 25.'” Daniel Finkelstein of The Times calls it “the rarest and most valuable record ever made,” because of Sinatra and Ringo’s involvement and the fact that there’s only one. She died of leukemia in 1994, so it’s unclear who has the recording now. Which means the copy that Ringo gave Maureen is the only one. The master was destroyed, and only one copy survives. He sang the Buck Owens hit 'Act Naturally', and performed a duet with Cilla Black, 'Do You Like Me Just a Little Bit' on her BBC One television programme, Cilla. “If this is true, it would mean that it predated the Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ and Mary Hopkins’ ‘Those Were The Days’ (both enormously successful singles) as the first Apple ‘release.'” In February 1968, Starr became the first Beatle to sing on another artist's show without the others. “The recording was pressed as a single and reportedly given the notation ‘Apple 1,’ they write. Some fans believe Sinatra’s “Maureen Is A Tramp” is the “first song in the catalog of the Beatles’ brand new Apple Records label, although it was never commercially released,” IB Times writes. However, IB Times also writes that a book called Magical Mystery Tours claimed that Ringo got Ron Kass, another Beatles’ assistant, to ask American songwriter Sammy Kahn to mention the project to Sinatra. They claim Ringo asked Peter Brown, The Beatles’ business manager at the time, to help him get a hold of Sinatra in California. He wanted Sinatra to record a song for Maureen.Īccording to the IB Times, there’s some confusion about how Ringo got in touch with Sinatra, though.
